The Appalachian Trail – Unicoi Gap to Chattahoochee Gap

HIKERS – John Bellamy, Dave Haslett, John Hires, Jack Jacobi, Dan Knight, Hayward Marshall, Wayne Miller, John Mooneyham, Bob Presley, Dan Ross, Doug Russell, Jack Slaton.

TRAIL INFO. – Our hike today was on the Appalachian Trail starting at Unicoi Gap, GA. We hiked southward to Chattahoochee Gap.

Directions: Take Hwy. 75 N. out of Helen for approximately 9 mi.. look for the Appalachian Trail crossing signs.

Fauna identified: Salamander, Pileated Woodpecker, White Breasted Nuthatch, Carolina Wren, Dark-eyed Junco, Tufted Titmouse.

Another beautiful hiking day! Partly Cloudy to cloudy with temps. in the 50’s F. Total hike 9+ miles.

We visit the spring reported to be the official headwaters of the Chattahoochee. The only place that you can actually “straddle the river”!
