TRAIL INFO. – Today’s hike was on the Currahee Mountain Trail and The Broad River Trail.

On this very cold morning we decided to hike on our southern-most trails in our range. In fact we hiked to the top of the final mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountain Range. The Currahee Mountain Trail is a very nice short hike up the mountain. The distance is about 1.5 miles round trip. Next, we took the short drive up to the Broad River Trail in the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area. We hiked from the trail-head at Dick’s Creek to the end of the trail at Farmer’s Bottom and returned. This hike was 8 miles counting the hike to the trail-head from our parking spot.

Total hike for the day – 9.5 miles.

Directions: Currahee Trail – Take Highway 123 West from Toccoa, GA – Turn left onto Highway 184 toward Homer. Drive for almost a mile and you will park at the old Currahee Voting building on the right. (simple white building with two doors). The trail starts just to the right of the building.

Broad River Trail – Take Hwy. 123 west out of Toccoa and turn left onto Ayersville Road which is near the entrance to Patterson Pump, Inc. Follow this road for less than a mile and turn left onto F.S. Road 87. Drive about 2 miles past the game checking station and look for the trail head on the right.

Another great day for a hike! Fair and cold. Temperatures ranging from 20 F to the mid 30’s F.

BIRDS IDENTIFIED: Dark-eyed Junco, Pileated Woodpecker, Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Carolina Wren. .
