Appalachian Trail Woody Gap to Gooch Gap, GA

This week, we hiked on the Appalachian Trail from Woody Gap in Georgia southward to Gooch Gap. This is an out-and-back hike of 7.2 miles.

HIKERS – Phil Achey, John Bellamy, June Bellamy, Ed Hale, Bill Hunt, Jack Jacobi, Fred Marland, Dick Metzgar, Wayne Miller, Dan Ross, Doug Russell, Pom Sinnock, Jack Slaton, David Whitaker, and Geri Whitker.

TRAIL INFO. – This is a beautiful portion of the Appalachian Trail in the N. GA mountains. The trail rolls through a nice hardwood forest with some very nice mountain views along the way. Today, we did an out-and-back hike from Woody Gap to Gooch Gap.

Directions: Take Hwy. 129 N from Cleveland, GA for about 15 mi. then turn left at Turner’s Corner and travel several miles to Hwy 60 (rock pile) turn right and drive to the top of the mountain to the A.T. crossing at Woody Gap. Park on the left and hike southward.

Another great day for a hike – Mostly sunny, with temperatures ranging from the low 50’s to the low 70’s.

Hiking distance approx. 7.2 miles

We met several thru-hikers headed for Maine!

WILDFLOWERS IN BLOOM: Mouse -Eared Chickweed

BIRDS IDENTIFIED: Towhee, White Breasted Nuthatch, Carolina Chickadee, Pileated Woodpecker, Titmouse, Downy Woodpecker, Crow, Blue Jay, Red Eyed Vireo.
