Appalachian Trail – Woody Gap Northward, GA

April 10, 2007

This week, we hiked on Georgia portion of the Appalachian Trail from Woody Gap toward Jarrard Gap. We did an out and back hike of approximately 8.2 miles.

HIKERS – Phil Achey, Melissa Anderson, Jack Jacobi, Wayne Miller, Joe Raguckas, Doug Russell, Pom Sinnock, Dave Standard, Bob Thompson, David Whitaker and Geri Whitaker.

TRAIL INFO. – This is a very nice portion of the Appalachian Trail. There are some great mountain vistas along the way with moderate mountain terrain. This time of year, you are likely to meet quite a few thru-hikers headed for Maine. Today, we met more than 20 as we hiked back southward to Woody Gap after lunch.

Directions: Take Hwy. 129 N from Cleveland, GA for about 15 mi. then turn left at Turner’s Corner and travel several miles to Hwy 60 (rock pile) turn right and drive to the top of the mountain to the A.T. crossing at Woody Gap.

Another great day for a hike! Partly cloudy and cool with temperatures ranging from the mid 40’s to low 60’s.

Hiking distance – 8.2 miles

WILDFLOWERS IN BLOOM: Red toadshade trillium, Yellow toadshade trillium, erect white trillium, common violet, round leaf yellow violet, white violet, and halberd-leafed yellow violet, rue anemone, star chickweed, cut leafed toothwort, dandelion, and daisy fleabane.

BIRDS IDENTIFIED: Red Eyed Vireo, White Breasted Nuthatch, Carolina Wren, Pileated Woodpecker, Yellow Throated Vireo, Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, Crow, Black Throated Green Warbler, Towhee, Ovenbird, Turkey Vulture, Domestic Rooster
