Bartram Trail- Scaly Mountain – NC, September 16, 2008

Today’s hike was on the Bartram Trail off of the Highlands / Dillard highway from Osage Mountain Overlook to the Summit of Scaly Mountain and beyond.

HIKERS – Jack Jacobi, Linda Johnson, Wayne Miller, George Otis, Joe Raguckas, Vic Robson, Dan Ross, Doug Russell, Faye Sisson, David Whitaker , Geri Whitaker and Carole Wintle.

TRAIL INFO. – A nice hike on the Bartram Trail in the edge of NC. The trail climbs up and over the summit of Scaly Mountain giving excellent mountain views from several large rock faces. Today was completely fogged-in with poor visibility but it was still a very nice hike. The trail was very slippery with numerous tree roots. This was a 6 mile round trip hike with lots of elevation change.

Directions: Osage Overlook is 5.7 miles west of Highlands on NC Hwy. 106. Or from Dillard, GA turn right on GA 246 which becomes NC 106 and drive approx. 9 miles to Osage Overlook on the right.

Another great day for a hike! Cloudy, with some light rain and fog with temperatures remaining in the low 60’s F.

WILDFLOWERS IN BLOOM: Grass of Parnassus, Tall Lobelia, Heart-leafed Aster, Golden Aster, Stiff Aster, Perfoliated Aster, Blue Aster,Milkwort, Witch Hazel, Hawkweed, Featherbells, Southern Harebells, Starry Campion, Mountain Gentian, White Woods Aster, White Snakeroot, Evening Primrose, Tall Bluet and Asiatic Dayflower.

BIRDS IDENTIFIED: Blue Jay, Junco, Veery, Towhee.
