| Today’s hike was on the trails of the Frady Branch Trail System in Stephens County near Toccoa, GA. There are several trail options in this area . Today, we hiked the Leatherwood Creek Loop and a portion of the Perimeter Loop trail. Total hike – 6 miles
HIKERS – John Bellamy, June Bellamy, Pam Euliss, Bill Hunt and Dan Ross. TRAIL INFORMATION – Parking at the trailhead at the dead end of the Forest Service Road off of Highway 184 for the Leatherwood Creek Trail. These are nice multi-use trails with mostly gentle terrain and each of the trails feature historic sites with information signs. Nice trail markers are found at each trail intersection. Directions: Heading west from Toccoa on U.S. 123 , cross highway 17 at the Jeanette Jameson intersection and continue one quarter mile and turn left onto Highway 184 toward Homer. Continue on 184 and you will pass Currahee Baptist Church and continue a mile or less and look for the Frady Branch Recreation sign on the right. Turn here and continue on the Forest Service road for more than a mile (do not take the left hand turn that you see). Stay straight and the road will come to a dead end. This is the trailhead for Leatherwood Creek. Another great day for a hike! Sunny and cold with a light wind. Temperatures ranged from 27-34 degrees F. Hiking distance – 6 miles. FLOWERS IN BLOOM: – none BIRDS IDENTIFIED: Northern Cardinal, Black-capped Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco, Eastern Bluebird, American Crow, Pileated Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker and a Flock of Turkeys in flight. |
