TRAIL INFO. – This is a beautiful portion of the A.T. with great views from Wesser Bald using the old fire tower. The tower burned years ago leaving the metal support beams and steps. An observation deck was later built on the top for hikers to enjoy. From the tower, you have an unobstructed 360 degree view. North, you see the Smoky Mtns. across Fontana Lake (small portions of the lake are visible), the Balsam Mtns.(Blueridge Parkway) to the NE and the Cowee Mtns. . East – Tellico Valley, and the Little Tennessee River valley. South – the Nantahala ridge, including Winespring Bald . West – Valley River Mtns, the Snowbirds, and the Slickrock Range. Total hiking distance today – 5+ mi. with lots elevation change – moderately strenuous. Directions: To reach the trailhead in Tellico Gap, follow route 28 North out of Franklin. Turn left across the new white concrete “lost bridge” onto Tellico Road. Follow this road as it climbs through scenic Tellico valley, turns to a gravel road, passes Tellico Trout farm, and finally climbs steeply up to the gap. There’s a lot of parking space at the gap, and you want to follow the Appalachian Trail (AT) North – (away from the power-line and starting next to the fire-road). Alternate route – Come in from the other direction using Wayah Road past Nantahala Lake continue on Otter Creek Rd. to the gap. Another great day for a hike!
