The Chattooga River Trail – Lick Log Creek Falls

This week’s hike was on the border of GA/SC on the Chattooga River Trail from the Highway 28 Bridge on the SC side of the river to Lick Log Creek Falls and Pigpen Falls.

Trail Info: Starting at the parking lot on the SC side of the Highway 28 (Russell) Bridge, we started on the lower fishing portion of the Chattooga River Trail and hiked along the river and later joined the main trail and continued on to Lick Log Creek and Pigpen Falls. It is a beautiful walk along the “Wild and Scenic” Chattooga River to two beautiful waterfalls. The terrain is moderately easy with some hills but more flat.

Total hiking distance today – 7.4 miles R.T. Directions: The trailhead is on Highway 28 between Walhalla, SC and Highlands, NC. The parking lot is on the SC side of the 28 bridge. This is the border of GA / SC.

Another great day for a hike! Partly cloudy and cool with temperatures ranging from 55 to 65 F.

WILDFLOWERS IN BLOOM: Cut-leafed Toothwort, Foamflower, Carolina Silverbell, Sweet White Violet, Halberd-leafed Yellow Violet, Florida Violet, Bird-foot Violet, Wooly Blue Violet, Smooth Yellow Violet, Dwarf Cinquefoil, Blue Phlox, Vernal Dwarf Iris, Yellowroot, Catesby’s Trillium, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Robin’s Plantain, Rue Anemone, Wood Anemone, Dog Hobble, Ground Pine, Flowering Dogwood, Wild Ginger, Little Brown Jug, Pussy Toes, Bluets, Sweet Shrub, Dandelion, Trailing Arbutus and White Pine.

BIRDS IDENTIFIED: Carolina Wren, Tufted Titmouse, Red-eyed Vireo, Pileated Woodpecker, Belted Kingfisher, Black-and-White Warbler, Pine Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler and American Crow.
