Appalachian Trail – Gooch Gap to Cooper Gap and back – GA

March 13, 2018

Today’s hike was on the Appalachian Trail from Gooch Gap to Cooper Gap, GA and back.

HIKERS – Mike Bell, Ray Clark, Joe Collins, Renee Corbett, Angela Evans, Tim Hale, Bill Hunt, Bob Magee, Dick Metzgar, Mary Lu Norton, Jeanne O’Connor, Terre Pratt and Tony Presley .

TRAIL INFO. – This section of the A.T. is beautiful with lots of great mountain views, creeks and beautiful woodlands. The terrain is hilly as typical of the Georgia portion of the Appalachian Trail but the hills are not as extreme.We met many thru-hikers today 12-16 miles into their 2,200 plus mile journey to Mt. Katahdin Maine. !

Total hiking distance 9.9 mi

Directions: Take Hwy. 129 N from Cleveland, GA for about 15 mi. then turn left at Turner’s Corner and travel several miles to Hwy 60 (rock pile) turn right and drive past the top of the mountain and the A.T. crossing continuiing to the bottom where you will see the lake. Turn left onto Cooper Gap Road which becomes a gravel Forest Service Rd. 42 and continue 2.7 miles to Gooch Gap.

Another great day for a hike! Fair, breezy and cold. Temperatures ranging from 28 F to 38 degrees F.

FLOWERS IN BLOOM: none

BIRDS IDENTIFIED: Black Vulture, American Crow, Tuffted Titmouse and the Pileated Woodpecker

We met many thru Hikers on their 2,000 plus mile journey to Maine! See each one at the bottom of the report!

These hills are significant but not near as steep as the section from Woody Gap to Gooch Gap.

Lots of large tall Poplar Trees in this area.

Plenty of water along today’s section of the A.T.!
