Hikingsouth Hike of the Week

Rabun Bald from Kelsey Mt. Rd.

September 3, 2019

TThis week’s hike was on the Bartram Trail near Sky Valley, GA Trail to the 2nd highest peak in Georgia – 4,696 ft Rabun Bald.

HIKERS:, Ray Clark, Joe Collins, Greta Driggers, Jim Driggers, Tim Hale, Bob Magee and Edwin Pruitt

TRAIL INFORMATION – Parking at Kelsey Mountain Road, there is a connector trail leading up to the Bartram Trail and on up to the summit of Rabun Bald. The connector trail is marked with a green blaze.

The terrain is strenuous due to a large elevation gain but we rate it only moderately strenuous since it is a short hike of a little less than 4 miles round-trip.

Directions: Take Hwy. 441 N from Clayton, GA through Dillard, GA and turn right onto GA 246 / NC 106 toward Highlands, NC. Drive about 7 miles and turn right at the old Scaly Mtn. Ski Slope (Hale Ridge Rd.). Be sure to go straight at the intersection with Bald Mtn Rd. Go a total of approximately 3 miles and look for Kelsey Mountain Road and turn left and drive to the end of the pavement and you will see the access trail on your right.

Another great day for a hike! Mostly fair, temperatures 70-75. Hiking distance – 3.7 miles.

WILDFLOWERS IN BLOOM: Goldenrod, Woodland Sunflower, White Snakeroot, White Wood Aster, Wild Hydrangea.

OTHER FAUNA: Toad
