Name: Chattooga River Trail from US76 - 1st 2.5 miles
Distance: 5.2
Difficulty: Moderate
Total Climbing Elevation: 748
Type: Out & Back
Notes: This is a 5.2 mile total out & back hike of the 1st 2.5 miles of the Chattooga River Trail starting at the GA-SC border off of US Hwy 76 southeast of Clayton, GA. While this portion of the trail is not directly on the Chattooga River, except at the start, it is a very nice hike with rolling hills. This portion of the trail is in excellent condition along a mostly leaf and pine straw cover path. Today there were a number of early wildflowers including blooming Trillium and Dwarf Crested Iris. Temperatures were in the upper 40's to lower 50's with high clouds which made for a comfortably cool hike. Our small group of 4 was in no rush and just glad to be out in these beautiful surroundings, but observing "social distancing," during the period of the Coronavirus outbreak.
