Name: Sawmill Gap to Wayah Bald via Bartram & Appalachian Trails
Distance: 8.1
Difficulty: Moderate
Total Climbing Elevation: 1,683
Type: Out & Back
Notes: While many of the leaves had already dropped, it was still a beautiful day for a hike with cool temperatures, partly cloudy skies and light winds. The trail was dry, very leafy, and in excellent condition. The AT portion of the hike from Wine Spring Gap to Wayah Bald was, as expected, a bit rocky and rooty. Just a couple of isolated wildflowers, but as Linda Shultz showed us, the seed heads of many of the wildflowers are striking. For an 8-mile hike and ~1,700 feet of elevation gain, this hike was moderately difficult with just the right combination of ups and downs to make it enjoyable. Dick Metzgar and Dave Hinson pleasantly surprised us by meeting us at the old fire tower on Wayah Bald.
