TRAIL INFO. – Starting from the intersection of hwy. 180 and alt 180, North of Helen, GA, we hiked Jack’s Knob Trail Southward and joind the Appalachian Trail at Chattahoochee Gap and continued on for about 2.5 miles toward HogPen Gap. Round trip 10 miles.

Another beautiful hiking day! Cloudy skies with temps ranging from 28-48 degrees F. This trail is moderately strenuous with several climbs but it has a nice long flat stretch on the A.T. about a mile past Chattahoochee Gap. Woodland trail with lots of nice mountain views!

A short side trail at Chattahoochee Gap leads to the spring that is documented to be the official “headwaters of the Chattahoochee River”.

A mile or so past the gap, we came to a nice long flat stretch of the Appalachian Trail. It is actually an old road-bed and this is one of several culverts that we came by on the trail. (probably built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s.)
